PhD

Finally, I have submitted my PhD thesis on Jan, 20th 2010. The viva will be in March and my position as a research assistant at the Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing, Johannes Kepler University Linz will end with March 2010.

I've done lectures on databases and the Web at the Upper Austrian University of Applied Sciences from 2005 to 2008. I'm occasionally holding lectures on Semantic Web topics at the Johannes Kepler University Linz.

  • Autonomous Bid Agent Service for a multivariate auction system developed by Tiscover AG
  • DaVinci Web Engineering Framework: Homepage at SourceForge.net (Java-port of phpDaVinci, not maintained)
  • phpDaVinci: Development of an UML-based application framework for PHP/Java, called DaVinci (see http://phpdavinci.sf.net, download this paper or my diploma thesis). The MVC-concept of Smalltalk-80 was adopted and for the view-tier I used the concept of a "Scenegraph", which is popular in Computer Graphic APIs. The difficulty was to use PHP4 in a strong Object-oriented manner. The stateless persistance of the application state with a script language was the biggest problem, that's why projects like the SRM have been introduced.
  • Orgasmic Ride, a Virtual Reality Fitness Training Simulation Game - players could step or ride connected over Ethernet against one another on a railway system with switches, collision detection, real-life physics, and so on.... (map was based on BSP Treens, we used ID-Soft's GTK Radiant for editing the sceneries).
  • MP3-Jukebox: during my studies we developed a networked MP3-Jukebox running on a PhotoPlay kiosk from Funworld - the database and files on the clients could be synchronized by a central server in the headquaters)
  • GIS mapping system for the Wienerberger AG - the company wanted to automatically geo-code all its settlements in Europe, we did it for Belgium, Poland, and Germany
  • Social Study about the impacts of new media, mass media and information systems
  • Virtual Communities (social study, 1999) - yes, Web 2.0 is not so new! Do you remember www.clickcities.de? ;-) In the 90ies I had a cyber novel running where many people could continue a long "user generated" story ;-) - this was fun! And in 1998 I set-up an alumni website for our former classroom to keep in contact with each other and update addresses.
